Governors with an advisory group consisting of Dr. Banting, Mr. Best, the Professors in charge of the Departments of Physiology, Medicine, and of Hygiene and Preventive Medicine (the latter being also the Director of the Connaught Laboratories), the associate Director of the Connaught Laboratories and a patent attorney; and a graduate of the University in Biochemistry is employed as a full-time Executive Secretary.
Development of the manufacture of Insulin on a large scale.
The manufacture of Insulin was developed on a large scale commercial basis by Eli Lilly and Company of Indianapolis and by the Connaught Laboratories, University of Toronto. (For details, please see The Journal of the American Medical Association, June 23, 1923, Vol. 80 pp. 1850-1851).
Insulin is now being manufactured in the United States by five manufacturers other than Eli Lilly and Company and on terms very similar to those under which the latter Company operate.
The licensing and control of this mauufacture is done by the University of Toronto through the offices of the Insulin Committee, and the University collects a small royalty of the net selling price of Insulin sold by its licensees.
Method of control of Primary distribution of Insulin in Canada and the United States.
Under the direction of the Insulin Committee, Eli Lilly and Company and the Connaught Laboratories distributed Insulin in the first instance only to the leading hospitals and diabetic specialists in Canada and the United States. The scope of distribution was gradually widened to include more hospitals, clinics and specialists. Various hospitals then commenced to give short courses in insulin therapy and as more insulin became available, it was supplied to any physician
