Dear Dr. Banting:-
I fully appreciate your feelings regarding credit for the discovery of insulin, and it is inevitable that various persons should seek to obtain as large a share in this credit as possible. I am enclosing an amended copy of the first two paragraphs of our proposed review, embodying the suggestions of all concerned. That one point which may possibly seem objectionable to you lies in the phrase "under the direction of Professor J.J.R. Macleod".* Though this passage was
suggested by Professor Macleod, it amounts to practically the same thing as your own statement in the Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine: "The feasibility of the hypothesis having been recognized by Professor J.J.R. Macleod, work was begun under his direction in May, 1921, in the Physiological Laboratory of the University of Toronto." In view of the practical identity of these statements, it seems scarcely necessary to oppose the phrase mentioned, even though your former statement may have been made under some pressure. I hope on the other hand that Dr. Macleod will acquiesce in the changes which you suggested. You will see that my neutral editorial position is rather difficult. I shall be glad to follow your advice regarding the order in which the articles are reviewed. Such a review seems to be needed, for I have received letters from European correspondents asking where in the world such a discovery has been announced.
Our results with insulin continue to improve as we receive larger supplies. It is a tremendous discovery, and you need not worry about receiving credit enough.
Mr. Anchester talks more than he gives. You need not pay any very serious attention to him, as he talks with every doctor he can find.
I am looking forward to the meeting in Toronto on November 25.
Sincerely yours,
Frederick M. Allen

* I have changed the original phrase, which was "in the laboratory and under the direction of Professor J.J.R. Macleod." You may like the present form better.
