Professor Macleod Page 2.
Wells. We went around the North Coast to Devon and Cornwall, and back to London around the South Coast. We were twenty-one days on the trip and had only two days of rain.
We had a rather amusing time at the Olympic Games, but did not accomplish much in the way of research. I did obtain blood samples, however, from ten of the Marathon runners immediately after the race, and found that three of them who had not carried dextrose during the run were suffering from severe hypoglaecaemia. From Amsterdam we went on to Berlin, Dresden, Prague, Nurenburg, Munich, Strassbourg, Paris, the Channel Islands and back to London.
I found everything running smoothly in the Department of Physiology when I returned, and I think we shall be able to handle the year's work fairly satisfactorily. I am taking charge of Proctor, and we are going to study some effects of physical training on the muscles, particularly muscle glycogen in dogs.
I hope that your new house is progressing satisfactorily and that Mrs. Macleod and you will be very comfortable in it.
With the very best regards to Mrs. Macleod and to you from my wife and myself, I remain,
Sincerely yours,
C.H. Best,
Assistant Director, Connaught Laboratories.
