Typescript letter written on The Johns Hopkins University, School of Medicine, Department of Pharmacology letterhead and signed by John J. Abel. Autograph additions made in ink. Letter accompanying two samples of crystalline insulin which Abel and his assistants developed at Johns Hopkins. In this letter he states 'I have sent similar samples to Banting. You and he are the first outside of Baltimore to see these crystals of insulin.'

Abel became the first full-time professor of pharmacology in the United States when he established the department of pharmacology at Johns Hopkins University in 1893. He isolated epinephrine (adrenaline) in 1898 and insulin in crystalline form in 1926.
