In 1925, Sir Robert Falconer, then President of the University of Toronto, and others on the University's Board of Governors launched a major fundraising campaign to provide funding for a private endowment. The endowment was to increase support for the Banting and Best Chair of Medical Research and to fund future medical research projects at the University of Toronto and elsewhere. The campaign's goal of $500,000 was quickly reached.
