Item is a gold medal in a blue leather box. One side depicts the red dragon of Wales and bares the inscription: 'Medal insulin Cymru. Welsh insulin medal.' The other side depicts Elizabeth Hughes and the inscription: 'Elizabeth Evans Hughes 1907-1981. One of the first children to be treated with insulin in 1922.'

In 1995, the Eli Lilly Company in Britain commissioned a number of Welsh Insulin Medals to honour Welsh diabetics who had lived with the aid of insulin for fifty years or more. The medal honours Elizabeth Evans Hughes as one of the first children to be treated with insulin in 1922 and commemorates her Welsh background.
