Temporary Site Performance Issues

This site is currently experiencing technical difficulties, resulting in slowness or temporary unavailability. We are working to resolve these issues. In the meantime, you can access The Discovery and Early Development of Insulin Collection on Collections U of T.

This section presents a chronological summary of the discovery and development of insulin as a pharmaceutical product. The timeline covers the initial isolation and experimental testing of pancreatic extract in Toronto in the summer of 1921, the work leading to the refinement and large-scale production of insulin and its application in clinical practice through 1923, to the commercial manufacture of the product and its rapid world-wide dissemination by 1926.
